Wherever possible, we need to try and cut down the amount of waste we generate at source.  You can do this by reusing and repairing goods or buying second-hand rather than automatically buying new. Try and avoid the cheap ‘throw away’ products and opt if possible for ones that will last.

Recycling household waste provides a huge opportunity to make a difference and tackle the 500,000 tonnes of household waste Birmingham produces each year.

Did You Know....?

Recycling one tin can saves enough energy to power a television for 3 hours and the new can would be ready to use again in just 6 weeks.

One tonne of newspaper requires 24 trees to be felled. Recycled paper produces 73% less air pollution than if it was made from raw materials.

One recycled plastic bottle would save enough energy to power a 60-watt light bulb for 3 hours. Plastic can take up to 500 years to decompose.

There are a number of ways to recycle in Birmingham.

In the home

There is a paper collection service from nearly 90% of the 400,000+ homes in Birmingham and the City Council plans to introduce a multi-material kerbside collection of dry recyclables across the city by 2010/2011. The rollout is ongoing, so you may already be on the scheme and able to put out your plastics, paper, aluminium cans and glass in the box every fortnight.

There has also been a trial of fortnightly green (garden) waste collections from homes and as a result of its success, the Council is seeking to introduce a new collection service to all suitable households - the timeframe for the rollout is not clear.

Out and about

There are a multitude of bring sites (bottle and paper banks etc) around the city which you can take recyclable materials to. Also green garden waste and other recyclable materials can be taken to the five Household Recycling Centres around the city.
