We are looking for someone to take the lead on our work to support local shops and promote the benefits of these as opposed to supermarkets and larger retail outlets.

The group has successfully helped to defeat planning applications for supermarkets in various areas of Birmingham, but currently we rely on one planning campaigner for most of this work. It is very important for our profile locally that we continue with this work which is strongly valued by local community groups.

The New Economics Foundation has also done a lot of good work on the subject, including this report on clone towns.

To do this role:

You will care about the environment and the links between local supply chains, jobs and sustainability.

You will have good communication skills and a desire to use these to promote positive environmental messages.

You will have the ability to do internet-based research and communicate the results for internal and external purposes.

You will be good at building links with other organisations.
