A real regional assembly for the West Midlands???
Following on from Lord Faulkner's speech on November 13th 2001 the much-awaited
White Paper on devolution for England is expected in the New Year. The headline
grabber so far has been bye-bye to the Shires. This is due to the demands for
there not to be a third tier for decision making in England. Thus the theory
goes remove the shires but, as we in the West Midlands know, we have the only English
Unitary County Council: Herefordshire. Whatever the results of the debate we
are already aware of some potential outcomes and within FOE will be able to continue
our work at local, county and regional level.
And finally from all of us here in WMFOE best wishes for the festive season and
here's to more campaign success in 2002.
