Friends of the Earth Birmingham Action Briefing Oct 98/Nov 98 |
In my first few weeks of being a supposed day time campaigner, I tried everything from learning how to use the photocopier, making everyone tea, rearranging the office, to writing letters of concern to local MPs with regard to the recycling of plastics. This all gave me a sense of self righteousness but still did not fulfil my need for something a little more challenging.
That is until one afternoon, when I plucked up the courage to mention to my colleague, Jane Dutton, my plans to organise a benefit gig. Through her enthusiasm and encouragement she bullied me into setting a date for it (in the kindest possible way). Thank you Jane.
Before I knew it I was involved in fund-raising for the campaign against the Birmingham Northern Relief Road. Being involved in music I was able to put on a group for whom I was doing guest vocals. So now, I'm doing :
Fund-raising Promoting Campaigning, and also Keeping my hand in with music
Viva la, I'm a happy Friend of the Earth
P.S. The benefit gig, 'Against the BNRR' , will be at the Hare & Hounds, Kings Heath on Wednesday 7th October. Doors open 8.00 pm. See the advert in this newsletter.
