Volunteer in the Hotseat...

Annie Green

What do you do at Birmingham Friends of the Earth? How long have you been around?

Reception work mainly and anything else that needs doing. Sometimes admin work too. I’ve been here Friday mornings for one year now.

What motivates you to work here?

I’ve always been interested in Friends of the Earth, ever since I was a child. Now, my motivation mainly comes from concern for my children. My daughter is environmentally conscious and badgers me to ensure I recycle as much as possible, buy animal-friendly products and so on.

What does Birmingham Friends of the Earth do best in your view?

We’re a trusted local resource as we have been around for a long time and we have connections to so many other groups, we can always help people with whatever it is they are doing.

What kind of queries do you get on the phone and in person?

Receptionists direct people to the right person within Friends of the Earth or to other organisations that are more appropriate to help. I get a lot of queries on recycling. The strangest call I ever got was about environmentally-friendly cremations!

Why do you like working here?

There are so many friendly people at the Warehouse, I learn a lot and we are so well connected to the local community, I find out what’s going on.
