‘Don’t Burn Our Rubbish!’

The ‘Don’t Burn Our Rubbish - Recycle It!’ campaign was successfully launched in Shrewsbury with over 100 action postcards signed by the public.

The launch meeting was well attended by officers and councillors from both Borough and County Councils who heard from Dave Green of Shrewsbury Friends of the Earth about the local situation and our concerns, along with Friends of the Earth's Waste campaigner Anna Watson who gave an overview and talked about other campaigns against new forms of incineration.
The meeting was also addressed by Steve Burdis, waste management officer from the County Council, who outlined a PFI bid which has been prepared by the Shropshire Waste Management Partnership. This bid includes a target of 63% recycling by 2020 with no use of new incineration technologies!

There are many unanswered questions about this PFI bid, but we’ve been invited to a Waste Partnership Conference on June 22nd where we hope to find out more. One potential problem is that Shrewsbury (with 40% of Shropshire’s population) isn’t a member of the waste partnership!

We’re now very hopeful that the campaign’s twin objectives of increasing recycling targets and rejecting any form of incineration can be achieved, but we’re keeping up the pressure.

For postcards and master copies of posters and leaflets call Dave Green on 01743 244150 or email shrews.foe@virgin.net.
