Warehouse Focus
Action Briefing has been profiling the unique organisations with whom Birmingham Friends of the Earth is privileged to share the Warehouse. This issue we focus on one of our smaller tenants, the Society for Anglo-Chinese Understanding (SACU).
Unlike most of our tenants, SACU rent only storage space only from us, and have done so for five years. The society was founded forty years ago to promote understanding and friendship between British and Chinese people.
In its early days, SACU was almost alone in running trips to the then largely unknown Chinese mainland. It now publishes a quarterly magazine, called China Eye, for its members. China Eye is valued for, amongst other things, its independence: other publications about China tend to be funded by the Chinese or British Governments, or other agencies.
SACU has a fascinating library, now housed at Sheffield University and also holds a wealth of photographs from China, before and during the Cultural Revolution.
Membership forms are available via SACU's website www.sacu.org, or from me at the Warehouse, 54-57 Allison Street, Digbeth, B5 5TH..
