Don't burn our rubbish, recycle it!

Shropshire Friends of the Earth local groups will launch their summer 2004 waste campaign with a public meeting. 'Don’t Burn Our Rubbish, Recycle It!', will be held on Monday 24th May, 8pm, at St. Chad's Hall, Town Walls, Shrewsbury.

Speakers will include Friends of the Earth Waste Campaigner Anna Watson, who will introduce campaigning against the new incineration technologies, and Shrewsbury FoE's Dave Green, who will be giving the local picture.

With the Shropshire Municipal Waste Strategy up for revision later this year, now is a good opportunity to persuade Shropshire County Council to a) reject any form of incineration for municipal waste and b) set recycling targets high enough to meet Government targets without any incineration.

The present strategy includes the possibility of gasification/pyrolosis, probably at Battlefield, North of Shrewsbury town centre, with implications for the whole county. We’re aiming to get 1,000 postcards sent to the Leader of Shropshire County Council, and we will shortly have campaign leaflets and posters available.
