Devolution and the West Midlands: Sub-regional Awareness Raising Events
Who governs the West Midlands? Who should govern the West Midlands?
How will the 'English problem' - the future of English regions - be resolved and
what could it mean for the West Midlands?
* Is the status quo giving the Region what it needs; the Regional Government
Office, the Regional Development Agency - Advantage West Midlands, the Local
Authorities and the Voluntary Regional Assembly?
* Are additional powers and duties needed at the Regional level?
* What are the arguments for and against an Elected Regional Assembly? What constitution
might be adopted - the Welsh or London model?
These are some of the issues facing the West Midlands in the lead up to the awaited
Government White Paper on Devolution.
To help the West Midlands address the real issues that matter, the West Midlands
Regional Assembly is inviting stakeholders from organisations across the West
Midlands to attend awareness raising events in our sub-regions.
At each event delegates will hear about new information important to governance
in the West Midlands and the result of research undertaken in the region on behalf
of the Assembly, by a group led by Professor Charlie Jeffrey of the University
of Birmingham.
Results of this research will inform delegates by giving:
* An up-to-date picture of the organisations that currently contribute to governance
in the West Midlands.
* A detailed description of some alternative devolution models that might be
considered.
Thereafter, during late Spring/early Summer, the Assembly will be encouraging
stakeholders across the region to discuss the way forward for the West Midlands
and to contribute to debate at its 12 July Annual Meeting and Conference.
Be informed - have your say!
