Friends of the Earth Birmingham Action Briefing Feb 98/Mar 98 |
The December climate conference in Kyoto, Japan, ended with lower targets than was called for by many environmental groups. The agreement means the developed countries of the world have to reduce their emissions of greenhouse gases by 5.2% from 1990 levels by 2012 . The failure to agree tougher targets can be put down to the fossil fuel lobby who worked hard to sabotage the whole thing . The effort of groups like Friends Of the Earth at least meant there would be an agreement .
Thanks to all those of you who sent off Clinton/Blair climate postcards. Friends of the Earth delivered 30,000 of them to Downing Street .
Friends of the Earth's climate campaign will continue this year when the electricity supply market will be liberalised. This means you can choose any electricity supplier you like. Some companies will be offering green energy accounts, so look out for them when the time comes.
