One Example of Lobbying on Recycling

Members of Redditch’s Friends of the Earth group called on town MP Jacqui Smith to support the Doorstep Recycling Bill. The FOE members joined hundreds of others taking part in the ‘Waste No More’ rally in London. The Bill calls for every local authority to provide a doorstep recycling and composting service to every household by 2010. It is needed to increase England’s household waste recycling scheme from 12 per cent to the 50-60 per cent already achieved by many European countries.

Alistair Waugh, from Redditch FoE, said, “The UK has one of the worst recycling rates in Europe. In Redditch, we currently recycle about seven per cent of our waste while some of our European neighbours, such as Austria, recycle more than half of theirs.” However Jacqui Smith has refused to vote for the bill on March 14th!
