Birmingham Friends of the Earth is keeping a close eye on supermarket developments and local shop closures around the city. Our latest list of supermarket threats is here.
Planning Permission Granted / Supermarket certain to open Yardley
| Tesco
| | Planning permission given. | | Hodge Hill | Tesco | | Planning permission given. | | Stirchley | Tesco | | Planning permission given. Possibility of an appeal. This development is of huge threat to the Co-operative’s flagship store in the area. | | Hall Green | Tesco | | Opening an Express store near to Robin Hood Island. Clearly supermarkets are far from complementing the High St but taking over it. | | Chelmsley Wood | ASDA | | Being built as part of the town centre’s redevelopment. | | Attwood Green/ Lea Bank | ? | | New development – Supermarket to be built. Current wranglings about whether ASDA or Tesco to be given the green light. | | Sheldon | ALDI | | Granted planning permission for a development in the middle of the A45 Coventry Road. | | Kings Heath | Tesco | | Alcester Lanes End - Tesco Express to open soon. | | Hagley Road | Tesco | | Tesco Express to open soon (between Norfolk Road junction, before Bearwood). |
Pending/ in the pipeline Shirley | ASDA | | After many years of pushing, set to develop as part of the Heart of Shirley project, which will take up part of Shirley Park. | | Longbridge | ?
| | The City’s plan for the area’s redevelopment includes a new supermarket. | | Harborne Road | ?
| | Outline planning permission given for supermarket near to Five Ways Island as part of the huge Edgbaston Galleries development. |
Possible future stores Quinton | Netto
| | Keen to build. Quinton Labour Party campaigning against it, although they worked to encourage Tesco to the ward. Edgars Greengrocers (Hampton Court Road) are closing down due to ‘supermarket competition’. | | Eastside | ?
| | Proposal for supermarket as part of Masshouse Development in Eastside. No plans yet submitted. | | Spring Hill | Tesco
| | Icknield Street. Land owned by Tesco – status unknown. |
Unlikely to succeed Bartley Green | ASDA
| | Have their eye on the Barnes Hill site. Unlikely to succeed. | | Selly Oak | ASDA
| | ASDA would like to build opposite Battery Retail Park. Unlikely to succeed. | |
