Faith, climate change and Birmingham

Introduction
Climate change is and will be affecting people of all faiths and none. All faiths have clear positive messages about our duty to care for the earth. ‘Faith, Climate Change and Birmingham’ is a project aiming to highlight the climate issues at stake and the positive steps we can all take together to avert the worst, inspired by our faiths. Especially Birmingham has a great potential in this respect: it is a very diverse city and emits as much CO2 as the whole of the country of Paraguay, so any changes we make will have a significant impact.

Background
On 4 June 2006 Birmingham Friends of the Earth, in cooperation with Birmingham Sustainable Energy Partnership and the Environment Agency, organised a ‘Faith, Climate Change and Birmingham’ conference as part of FoE’s ‘broadening action’. The conference itself, which took place at Birmingham City Council, was a great success with over 100 people in attendance from the wide variety of people living in the city (including Christians of different denominations, and representatives of Muslim, Sikh, Hindu, Pagan, Buddhist and Humanist groups). The conference was opened by Cllr Paul Tilsley, Deputy Leader of the Council, and after an update from some key stakeholders in and around the city on climate change initiatives in the region, attendees broke up to work in sub-groups to focus on future action that they themselves will take both personally and in their communities.
